LESOTHO POLICE ACT

Founding provision of the constitution 1993 as amended with regard to establishment of LMPS.

  • Section 147 (i) of the constitution 1993 as amended by the first amendment to the constitution Act no 1 of 1996 stipulated that: there shall be responsible for the maintenance of law and order in Lesotho and shall have such other functions as may be prescribed by an Act of Parliament.

 

  • The command of the Police Service shall be vested in the Commissioner f Police and subject to any direction of the Authority; the Commissioner shall have the responsible for the administration and discipline of the Police Service.

 

  • As the mandate from the constitution empowering legislation Viz Police Service Act No7 of 1998; section 4 displays General Functions of Police Service and establishment thereof. It shall be deployed in and throughout Lesotho to uphold the law to preserve the peace, protect life and property, to detect and prevent Crime, to apprehend offenders, hiring offenders to justice and for associated purposes.
